Update: could be weekend before normal power is restored
A POWER company has warned it could be the weekend before normal electricity levels return - following a substation explosion.
EDF Energy is urging people to restrict their electricity use as the company's staff works to resume normal service to thousands of Chelmsford customers, following the explosion and fire that claimed the life of a man on Wednesday.
Power was lost to homes, offices and shops in the town following the incident at the electricity substation in Bishop Hall Lane, near to the Rivermead campus of Anglia Ruskin University.
A spokeswoman for EDF Energy said staff were not yet able to fully access the substation.
She said: "The emergency services believe that, sadly, a member of our staff has died at the scene. Our thoughts are with the family of the person involved.
"We are still unable to use this key site and it could be the weekend before power supplies return to their normal level of reliability.
"We would urge all customers in the area to limit their use of non-essential electricity to help us maintain supplies.
"We do understand how much inconvenience this may be causing in the local area, and apologise for this."
